Carlson Gracie Team takes third at Gracie Nationals

Gracie Nationals Results 2010 Ohio

Columbus, Ohio ( OH ) --On Saturday, December 5th, some of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners across the country competed in one of the premier grappling competions in Columbus, Ohio. In what turned out to be a very successful weekend for Carlson Gracie Team MMA, ten top Jiu-Jitsu competitors were able to help the team capture 3rd place at the Gracie Nationals Jiu-Jitsu Tournament. To go into a tournament with only ten members and having so much success really shows the type of hard work and great teaching that takes place on a daily basis with the Carlson Gracie Bulldogs.

With head Jiu-Jitsu instructor Jason Sullins developing top talent through his knowledge and experience, every competitor had the training necessary to be succesful and the results proved it. Having trained under Carlson Gracie and receiving his black belt from Carlson Gracie Jr., Jason Sullins has shown that not only is he one of the best Jiu-Jitsu competitors, but he is also one of the top coaches in this martial art as well. With the success that the bulldogs Jiu-Jitsu team has had this past year, it is a direct reflection on the training everyone is receiving in the gym everyday.

“To send a group of ten people to a tournment like the Gracie Nationals and come away with a 3rd place trophy as a team really shows the type of hard work being put in by our members and coaches.,” said instructor Brian Bishop who made the trip with the team. Being a Brown Belt in Carlson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and a Mixed Matial Arts/Jiu-Jitsu instuctor, Bishop added, "We are going to carry this momentum into 2011 and add to the Carlson Gracie tradition of producing champions at all levels.”

Many medals were won over the weekend, with many bringing home multiple golds. A trio of Mixed Martial Arts fighters from Carlson Gracie Team MMA brought home multiple golds in Gi and No-Gi including, Matt Collum, Ryan Haney and Sam Ferguson (3 golds: Gi/No-GI/Absolute Gi). Fighter/Instructor Matt Collum knew the team was going to be successful, but even with the confidence he was happy with how the team performed. The winter weather that hit the Midwest didn't stop the the team from making the trip or hurt their performance. “To go out and perform the way our team did and win 11 gold medals with ten guys against the quality of talent that is at the Gracie Nationals really shows how well the coaches prepared us.,” Collum added.

Joining Collum, Haney, and Ferguson on the medal stand were: Ryan and Jason Bishop, Joey Sullivan, No-Gi instructor Mark Vujovic, Leo Perez, and Malik Allah. Many members of the Jiu-Jitsu team were able to capture medals in both Gi and No-Gi, but the largest feat may have come from the teams youngest and smallest member. Joey Sullivan had originally been scheduled to compete in the seven and under age group, but ended up taking gold in a Gi division that featered compeitiors as old as ten and eleven. Few teams have the amount of talent that the Calrson Gracie kids program constantly produces and Joey proved it with his impressive showing at such a tough tournament.

Great teams often find ways to succeed and that's exactly what the Carlson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu team did when competing against some of the Nation's best. Now that the year is coming to an end, one can be certain that the Bulldogs are primed for a big 2011 with much of the success being credited to the coaches that put in endless amounts of work making sure their students reach their full potential as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu grappler.
